Change Of Major Procedures

Students may change their major (declare the pre-major, full major, or double major) through Student Success Hub. The pre-major GPA applies only to courses taken at UCSB or another UC. Courses taken at a junior college or state university are not calculated into the GPA. The social science and diversity courses are not computed into the GPA, but ALL courses for the pre-major, preperation for major, and full major must be taken for letter grades.

To Declare the Pre-Major:

Students must have completed at least one of the pre-major GPA requirements in areas A or B with a 2.3 (C+) GPA and no grade lower than a "C-". Then, they should complete the Change of Major form via Student Success Hub. Once approved, students will be officially declared a pre-sociology major.

To Declare the Full Major From the Pre-Major:

All pre-majors must complete the pre-major courses with a minimum 2.3 GPA, nothing lower than a C-, in areas A and B of the pre-sociology major sheet, in order to declare the full major. All pre-major requirements must be taken for a letter grade. No courses can be in-progress; all grades must be finalized in your course history. You will then submit a the Change of Major petition through Student Success Hub to transition to the full major (even if you are already in the pre-major). Please note that the change is not automatic, and must be initiated by you.

To Declare the Full Major From Another Major:

Students must have completed all the pre-major requirements with a 2.3 GPA (social science and diversity courses must be taken for letter grades, but will not be computed into the pre-major GPA). Courses in areas A and B must be completed with a 2.3 GPA, and nothing lower than a grade of "C-". Once these grades are finalized in GOLD, you will take the same steps outlined above to petition for the full major.

To Declare a Double Major:

When a student adds pre-sociology or sociology to an already declared major, the change of major procedures are the same as previously outlined but additional procedures might be required. Please contact Letters & Science Advising for any questions about the double major process or paperwork. You will work in tandem with advisors from both departments as you progress through your majors.

To Declare a Minor:

Please contact the advisor(s) for the minor that you are interested in adding, and they will help you to determine if you are eligible to add the minor, and what requirements might exist. Keep in mind that progress checks for minor's cannot be conducted in GOLD, so you will need to work in tandem with those advisors as you progress through the minor. As SOC advisors, we can only answer questions about the SOC major, so we will not be able to assist with any questions related to other departments or their requirements.
