Gender and Sexuality

UCSB Sociology is a leader in the study of gender and sexuality with a large number of faculty whose research, teaching and mentoring are centrally devoted to these areas of study. Over the last decade, UCSB has been consistently ranked among the top 5 graduate programs in “Sex and Gender” in U.S. News and World Report’s listing of best graduate programs. Our gender and sexuality faculty are among the leading scholars in the field with strong national and international reputations. Their path-breaking research has been at the forefront of intersectional approaches to both gender and sexuality that link structural and interpersonal inequality based on gender, race, ethnicity, class, nation, and sexuality. Unique to UCSB’s program, the faculty in gender and sexuality includes experts on all of the major institutions in society – economy, family, work and occupations, politics, media, health, education, and criminal justice—as well as on social movements and processes of social change. The study of gender and sexuality at UCSB thrives through the work of our graduate students, many of whom have gone on to become leading scholars in the field, and through the empirical research and theoretical writings of our faculty whose scholarship and teaching have garnered prestigious scholarly and mentoring awards and media attention.
